Re-marketing Bionic

Re-marketing Bionic

Bionic had a problem with getting the message through. After reviewing the whole project I noticed the following:
1. Christina was trying to make a feminist record. To talk about all things that a woman is in her mind. Which is where the title Bionic comes from. So of course the lyrics are about her sexuality, her relationships and her confidence.
2. Musically, the songs that actually got in the main album have the following characteristics in common:
- Simplicity in the composition and the songwriting.
-They follow styles that were successful and mainstream in past decades. Hip-hop, club, indie/new-wave and even waltz etc.
- Very intricate electronic production (but subtle, not overwhelming) with emphasis on effects of machinery operating that have a strong imposing character, or on ambient futuristic sounds.
- They'd be very successful as soundtracks accompanying classic superhero comics.
As such, the overall result is what is described as retro-futuristic in style, and it was accompanied by imagery of the same style. However the visual in the accompanying booklet was a bit all over the place and it could be as misleading as the order of the songs in the album, both of which made the overall material feel like the approach is more typically commercial and sexual and modern, failing to accent sonically, thematically and visually on what the album really was about (all the things I described above).

I don't want to bother you with the exact details of what was wrong before, but bellow is the order of songs re-worked by me, in order to promote the above mentioned elements in the songs in the absolute best way possible.
Additionally, I have kept things balanced, the pace smooth and each song is like a guide into the next one, especially regarding ambiance, the sound effects and the style direction, and also there's a stronger narrative. Listen to it via headphones and you'll see what I'm talking about. (If you do want to be bothered with what was wrong before regarding the track list in particular, I have a relatively extensive analysis provided at the end of the post.)
This is it:

01. My Girls
02. I Hate Boys
03. Bionic
04. Elastic Love
05. Love & Glamour
06. Glam
07. Woo Hoo
08. Morning Dessert
09. Sex For Breakfast
10. Lift Me Up
11. I Am (Stripped)
12. My Heart
13. All I Need
14. You Lost Me
15. Prima Donna
16. Vanity
17. Not Myself Tonight
18. Desnudate

For this list, I have stayed faithful to the original vision of Christina of having an introduction (originally Bionic; here it is My Girls and I Hate Boys), a main uptempo body, the ballads section and an uptempo finale.
The format is exactly the same.

My favorite part of the set is tracks 8-13, and more specifically the transition from I Am to My Heart and then on to All I Need. That part is the less polished, more real, because I Am (Stripped) finishes with the sound of someone getting up from a chair, My Heart is equally realistic because it is a real life clip and then All I Need has the same kind of ambient noise as the other two that makes it equally real. That part of the list is like waking up from a dream in a sense, especially after the more dreamy 8-12 and I love it.

Then, there is the booklet artwork. The booklet artwork was too busy, too much on the modern side and too much on the sexual side. It was not in par with the totally stripped down simplicity of the songwriting, nor did it truly cover the more romantic and ambient aspects of the sound of the album.

My take on the material is the following.

I have kept the cover as we know it:
<a href="http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3151/73036059.jpg" title="http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3151/73036059.jpg">http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3151/73036059.jpg</a>
I wouldn't keep it if I could, because Christina's original picture used here is not really showing anything different than her Keeps Getting Better cover shoot. It has the same qualities. (I have added a piece about the cover at the end of the post.)

For the booklet I have focused on keeping it super simple, basic, and emphasizing on the antithesis between the more dark, sexual, modern and the more dreamy, romantic, classical, as a representation of the sound and themes of the album.

2: <a href="http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/3641/40368206.jpg" title="http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/3641/40368206.jpg">http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/3641/40368206.jpg</a>
3: <a href="http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7459/39166461.jpg" title="http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7459/39166461.jpg">http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7459/39166461.jpg</a>
4: <a href="http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1096/64739275.jpg" title="http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1096/64739275.jpg">http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1096/64739275.jpg</a>
5: <a href="http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2884/13082680.jpg" title="http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2884/13082680.jpg">http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2884/13082680.jpg</a>
As you see I have only kept one image from each look. The black spaces in 1, 2 and 4 are where the credits for the songs go.
Same with 3, like in the original booklet, there will be song credits from the waist down.
Here I provide which song credits should go in each page:
1: My Girls, I Hate Boys, Bionic, Elastic Love
2: Glam, Woo Hoo, Morning Dessert, Sex For Breakfast
3: Lift Me Up, I Am, All I Need, You Lost Me
4: Prima Donna, Vanity, Not Myself Tonight, Desnudate
Notice how each Christina image works together with the graphic beside it and the meanings of the songs that are credited there.

The back cover of the booklet would be the 'thank you' message by Christina:
<a href="http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1171/19066180.jpg" title="http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1171/19066180.jpg">http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1171/19066180.jpg</a>

The disc and the image behind the disc are also black to match the rest:
the disc: <a href="http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/2307/98821691.jpg" title="http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/2307/98821691.jpg">http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/2307/98821691.jpg</a>
and the image that is hidden behind the disc: <a href="http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9403/91532805.jpg" title="http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9403/91532805.jpg">http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/9403/91532805.jpg</a>

Now the back cover would be white to contrast the black color on the inside and match the mainly white front cover. It would feature the song titles with big letters, their color gradually changing line by line from black to red or vice versa, and it would have no picture of Christina, but perhaps only very few decorative drawings inspired by the fans edition artwork which you can see bellow:
<a href="http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/103/35340426.jpg" title="http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/103/35340426.jpg">http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/103/35340426.jpg</a>
<a href="http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/5228/72392387.jpg" title="http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/5228/72392387.jpg">http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/5228/72392387.jpg</a>

The visual material, the way I reworked it, is very basic. In order to make it look stronger and more solid it would need more than the typical jewel case which feels lightweight and fragile. It would have to be a digipak, which means a whole-body, glossy thick-hard-cover package, that opens like a book with the booklet attached to the back of the front cover. It is the same size as the regular jewel case.

Latest Update:

My current playlist for Bionic is double:

Side A
01. My Girls
02. I Hate Boys
03. Bionic
04. Elastic Love
05. Love & Glamour
06. Glam
07. Woo Hoo
08. Morning Dessert
09. Sex For Breakfast
10. Lift Me Up
11. I Am (Stripped)
12. My Heart
13. All I Need
14. You Lost Me
15. Prima Donna
16. Vanity

Side B
01. Keeps Getting Better
02. Dynamite
03. Not Myself Tonight
04. Desnudate
05. Monday Morning
06. Bobblehead
07. Kimono Girl
08. Little Dreamer
09. Birds Of Prey
10. Stronger Than Ever

Side A is about "the world in a girl's head" theme of Bionic.
Side B is more about vague approaches on the subjects of Identity and Freedom and Expression. Not Myself Tonight and Desnudate are only remotely related to the theme of Side A and they are quintessentially Side B.
Sadly, Kimono Girl will never find its deserved place there, remaining unreleased...

Regarding the album cover:
Brilliant cover conceptually and as an execution. However Christina's portrait is just like a Keeps Getting Better portrait and nothing more, and the way the graphics blend with her photo, while really nice, makes for an annoyingly unclear final result; it is too busy given its purpose to be album cover. The cover would be perfect if it was just the graphics part, with more detailed/realistic lighting and shadows and a more rusty effect to make it look more 3D-like, over an empty background.
It would be like an architectural monument to Xtina, the Bionic woman.
And it would be great if the title logo "...{Bi-On-iC}" was applied as graffiti letter art at the bottom of the cover.

The overall vision is a white border and inside it, the more 3d-realistic version of the Bionic half-face drawing in the middle with "Christina Aguilera" written with metallic letters using the Bionic font over the drawing, all in front of a black background, while at the bottom of the cover, the Bionic logo with its original styling as ...{Bi-On-iC} is drawn with red spray over the borderline between the black and the white, with a bit of a comic book style edge.
So this would be the ideal cover for my repackaging.
And the matching back cover would be white, with graffiti sprayed letters in the style of the Bionic logo on the cover. The color of the letters would be different shades of red, from deep bright red to black.

Problems with the original order of songs in Bionic:
1. Bionic as the first song doesn't allow you to consider it so much as the full song that it truly is, but rather as an intro, which is a shame because it is so much more. Plus, there is this hip-hop approach on the vocals that, combined with this kind of production, doesn’t sit well with the mainstream listener’s ears; it works against the song without any introduction of some sort to this kind of sound.
2. Starting (after Bionic which works as an introduction) with the aggressive sex theme (while this album is supposed to be fun and sweet) and using the most mainstream of the sex songs in here to be the first in order makes up for an extremely aggressive opening for the album and an inaccurate one.
3. Then randomly adding the more alternative and innocent song (Elastic love) among those sexual songs makes the aesthetic of the album even more unclear.
4. Having Glam and Prima Donna so close makes them sound too same-y and generic, because their similarities are accented while the unique characteristics of each song are not.
5. Having All I Need, I Am and You Lost Me with the exactly same kind of production clustered together makes for a tiring listen only for the true fans and not the casual listener. Whereas I Am actually has an alternative (and better) version. If the stripped version of the song was included instead of the album version, and the ballads were reordered around that song, then that would change things up, resulting to a much more exciting listening.
6. I Hate Boys and My Girls in terms of lyrical content are both much more of an introduction to the album than a finale and they are too light to be appreciated after the string of heavy on emotion ballads. And things get only worse going from these more light songs to the more edgy and heavy Vanity.

Things that could be different:
My Girls and I Hate Boys opening the album would establish the hip-hop feel, the fun and sweet, and the feministic element of the album that justifies both the “sex” songs and the “relationship issues & self-empowerment” songs the best way possible. These two next to each other stand for both the more mainstream and the more alternative aspects of the electronic sound of the album without sounding like they don’t match.
Changing up the order of the ballads to sound more well jointed with the previous songs and including the stripped version of I Am works wonders in making them all feel like more of an easy listen.
Prima Donna has a similar theme with Vanity, and the two songs, practically sum up the sound of the album, Vanity being fun and electronic and prima donna being aggressive and hip-hop-ish.
Desnudate and Not Myself Tonight have a dark and aggressive sound that doesn’t match the more typically fun feel of the rest of the tracks remaining above the ballads in the list, so everything works better with these songs moved away from the first part of the album.

With the changes in the set list:
- As expected Bionic does sound much better and makes much more sense stylistically after My Girls has been played.
-Elastic Love right after Bionic both supports what I Hate Boys was about (hinting how Christina feels in her real life) and defines better the transition from Bionic to the more sexual songs.
-Glam sounds brilliant close to Woohoo, as their production is sort of emitting the same kind of a fun pulse.
-Desnudate does sound much better after NMT than Woohoo did right after NMT in the original set. It is simply a matter of the transition between the tracks, sonically.
-Morning Dessert sounds much better after Glam and WooHoo instead of Prima Donna, as Prima Donna is just too aggressive to be followed by such a smooth track, especially considering how tiring Prima Donna sounded after Glam in the first place anyway.
-I Am coming right after Lift Me Up, gives the listener a much different view of what the content of Lift Me Up is about. It makes it sound more like a heartbreak song than a love song. (and by this point I am thrilled about how confessional and biographical this album appears to be, even if it is not really, and how impossible it was to see that before, with the original order of songs).
-The stripped version of I Am brings along a fresh air of bright and light positive vibes, very much needed for I Am being the other ballad right next to the melancholic Lift Me Up.
-Then, All I Need not only fits much better in the positive atmosphere set by I Am (instead of the melancholic Lift Me Up), but also at this point it feels like it bears elements from all the other ballads in terms of how it feels sonically and stylistically, making for an excellent transition to the final piece of the puzzle, You Lost Me, and a great centre piece, the heart of the album.
-Also at that point the My Heart interlude doesn't feel like cutting the flow of the set like it did in its original place.
-You Lost Me is a fine closer for the ballad section. But in the original order it was followed by the light and dance-y I Hate Boys which was crushed drowned by the sentiment that You Lost Me builds before it. But when the song after You Lost Me is the aggressive Prima Donna that also has more of an intro than I Hate Boys did, then the result is totally different.
-Then, Prima Donna and Vanity together at the end, sum up the sound and styles of the whole album (except for the ballad sound of course, but that section is right above them anyway) and also make a statement about Christina having gone through all the themes of the album and now talking about who she is and where she stands having overcome all of that. They do that much better than I Hate Boys and My Girls did obviously.
It is very ironic that I would try to “correct” the set list by adding bonus tracks and removing album tracks, failing every time, only to find that the original choice of songs for the standard edition was really the only option in order to make it work.
That is a good thing, because that’s why the rest of the songs can be used to make a small compilation disk, which works perfectly as long as Kimono Girl ever gets released...
These are the tracks for the compilation:
Keeps Getting Better
Dynamite
Bobblehead
Monday Morning
Birds Of Prey
Stronger Than Ever
Kimono Girl
Little Dreamer
Plus Not Myself Tonight and Desnudate after the final perfecting of the main Bionic track list.
Which is really great if you think about it, because pretty much this specific compilation of tracks has EXACTLY the feel and styles of music that those of us who wanted a more alternative, electronic and experimental Bionic were looking for.

I updated again adding the last section just in case anybody is ever interested in why I changed the track list the way I did.

    Hahaha, Candee you're amazing!!!! <3 <3 <3

    Updated the post.

  • StarJ 05.12.2012

I kinda think that the only reason why this album didn't make a hit was bcus the media never gave it a chance. They just took one look at it and said "Oh, she's copying lady gaga" and never actualy gave it an honest rating (etc.)

  • MarBarr 05.01.2012

    true very true.

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.26.2012

That since they decide to make the offer, they could actually change things up slightly. And I consider my suggestion or the inclusion of Kimono Girl as a bonus track or a thousand other different things to be "change things up slightly". Then the offer would even be of interest to people who have already bought the album. And it would mean so much more than just a lower price without much to any effort at all.

  • MarBarr 04.26.2012

    What do you mean?

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.25.2012

    Chance wasted.

oh.. well you executed it better. you explain things well.

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.20.2012

@MarBarr that was Christina's idea, not mine! Wink
It is what she was trying to do with adopting the metropolis idea. But it was lost among the rest of the things in the video. Or at least there was no emphasis on it...

  • MarBarr 04.20.2012

Oh i never thought about it that way. Thank you so much Stripped713! Laughing out loud and xtinarox1113 i was thinking about that too earlier today,

  • Stripped713 04.20.2012

Marbarr it probably has something to do with the fact that those perfumes were not released in the USA. you can however purchase them on ebay, amazon and other websites. hope that helps! Smile

  • xtinarox1113 04.19.2012

I really like @Stripped713's idea for the video. I think it would have been better than what we got in all honesty.

This isn't really along the lines of what you all are talking about at the moment, but it still deals with Bionic. I was listening to Flo Rida and Sia's song Wild Ones today & I was wondering why Sia didn't actually sing any songs with Chrisitna on Bionic. I know she wrote like four songs with Christina for the album but she doesn't sing on any of the tracks. Do any of you know why? I'm just kinda curious.

  • MarBarr 04.19.2012

Ooh! nice addition to the futuristic idea Chris.

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.19.2012

I liked all the talk and ideas. I too agree that 'different' was supposed to be a focus of the single and video and it failed. And, I also agree that the public would be just as hateful. But one doesn't cancel the other.
Also the video idea you had, stripped713, I really liked it, but the futuristic element should be 60's futuristic. Wink

  • MarBarr 04.19.2012

That sounds like a cool concept Stripped713. I like it. Since you mentioned the perfume bottle it jogged my memory of a question i wanted to ask. How come we cant purchase Inspire, Royal Desire, and Secret Potion on this website?

  • Stripped713 04.19.2012

haha. Yeah I will never get over the CANDYMAN Video and how absolutely delicious she looked.

  • candeetwo 04.19.2012
lol yeah scrumptious Christina...ooh I almost bit my tongue trying to say that.
  • Stripped713 04.19.2012

dee just so you know I dont care that NMT was sexual. Christina being sexual does not bother me and you know that (wink wink) I just felt when you have the chance to be as limitless and futuristic as you want and you are telling people you are going to redefine what future means, and talking about the fact that you have no boundaries for a futuristic album...then a sexual theme just falls a little short for me. thats all.

  • Stripped713 04.19.2012

If you care to hear my idea. since you are so creative you may like or may not. After Christina was wearing that T shirt that said "baby jane is dead" I had an idea for the opening single and music video. It would be one of those longer videos in full with an intro part of Christina done up all like her b2b days and leaving somewhere in the backseat of a car and then ending up in a fatal car crash into a lake or body of water. Newspapers title "baby jane" is dead. "body not found" ect Then it cuts to a underground government research facility (kinda resident evil feeling) Where she has been suspended in hibernation until the year of 2112. (that way its not too futuristic but apocalyptic instead) She has been built into a Bionic woman, infusing metal parts with the technology they have discovered by now so that she can live and function again. Wakes up rips the chords and hookups to the machine and finds the dirty, dark facility abandoned all to the sound of the Bionic intro as played on iheart radio before NMT with that creepy "BIONIC" resounding. Shes finding her footing and learning to walk again. walking down dark hallways with lights flickering, looking creepy as hell. Finding other patients locked up, strait jackets, ect starts letting them out and they follow her as shes starting the intro to whatever the single should have been. I would have liked something dark and creepy. Disturbia meets dirrty or something like that.

I agree with you Chris jc xa, Americans are like that, very much media driven, imo, we Americans allow the media to tell us who to like or dislike and what things to think of this person etc, we are like sheep over here and it's frustrating to watch. For me, Bionic delivered everything Christina promised, and I think NMT video was what you said it was, it also is a perfect example of the media telling us what the video was instead of us seeing it for ourselves. I look at Madonna newest video right now and see the same elements of sex and dance styles. I looked outside to see if there was a firestorm that always comes with Christina's videos, all I saw was clear skies. Ultimately, it would not matter what the marketing is or would have been for Bionic, using any of these ideas would have gotten the same results as the ones we are left with now.
  • Stripped713 04.19.2012

My beef was not over the look. My beef was that Christina herself said Bionic was about redefining the future. She finally had the chance to be completely limitless in creative visuals. And yet she chose to just go with a dominatrix sexual theme instead of really pushing the boundaries as promised. B2B was so constricted to a certain look and time frame. I was really hoping Christina would live up to her words and really create some interesting videos. Both NMT and YLM left something to be desired. And aside from the concept, the visual effects of the fire in NMT were HORRIBLE and the product placement was way too much. You can do product placement without being so blatant. The camera was on that perfume bottle way too long. All in all it was just a let down. As was most of her album shoot with Alix Malka. If you look through his previous work its 10 times better than the Bionic shoot. I expected all these textures and colors and unique looks that truly would change the artistic side of Christina's image. Instead aside from a few great shots, it was a one note song. sorry its just how I feel.

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.19.2012

It is sad sometimes that Americans are usualy prone to this kind of reaction towards things they don't like or they don't see as worthy. There is a lot of negativity, especially with everything and everyone involved in the celebrity world. At first I thought that this was just a stereotype used in movies and stuff but then I saw that this is actually true in the internet and social websites, and sadly the rest of the world has started emulating this kind of mentality... The media are to blame a big part.

I like Stripped713's plan. But I don't believe the video for Not Myself Tonight was not good. The re-worked looks from Madonna's Express Yourself were beyond gorgeous and really brilliant. The rest of the looks were at best unimportant. It was a good production I think.

  • MarBarr 04.18.2012

yup in America, Chris jc xa.

  • Stripped713 04.18.2012

I would have never released NMT period. It was one of the weakest tracks and the video was horrible. If I were marketing Bionic...well frankly if I were marketing Bionic I would have insisted on some more futuristic sounding tracks but putting that aside and going with what actually was on Bionic, I would have released Elastic Love, Followed by Woohoo, Followed by You Lost me and finished up with Birds of Prey with all music videos having a truly unique music video with great visuals as Fighter did.

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.18.2012

I didn't know Nicki before WooHoo and I was happy with what she added. I haven't thought if it could've been better.
However WooHoo was the worst possible follow up to Not Myself Tonight, any way you look at it (even though it is far superior).

  • Stripped713 04.18.2012

eh I don't know...I happen to like Nikki Minaj alot but I was slightly underwhelmed by her lyrical addition to woohoo. I just felt it could have been better.

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.17.2012

No one should get any kind of crap for liking an artist, it seems so absurd to me, I don't even get what it means. Are you people all living in the USA? I ask because there is more negativity towards Christina there.

  • MarBarr 04.17.2012

I think "Woohoo" would have done better in 2011 or this year because Nicki Minaj's fan base has grown significantly thus drawing in more fans. or at least it would have done a bit better. im speaking of only one track. and i too get a lot of crap for continuing to be a Christina fan but i have been a fan since she first came out. I remember being six and saving up my allowance to buy the CD!

  • Chris_jc_xa 04.15.2012

thnx everyone! I didn't mean for this to be considered as a re-release plan, as what it truely is, is me trying to make sense of the album better. And as a result what I believe would have made the album work better, based solely on the material at hand and its nature. I doubt a re-release would make any sense at all. Unless it was something that Xtina decided to do just because, even though perhaps it would still attract negative feedback.
But my work is precise and amazing none the less. Cool

    I hope everybody's OK, I haven't been around much!

  • Stripped713 04.12.2012

I agree but disagree. I agree that some changes in the way things were played out and marketed could have easily changed the end result and response. I would not have selected NMT as lead single as its actually one of the weaker tracks and the video was not so futuristic and breaking new ground as it was a sexual dominatrix thing. I would have much rather seen Christina play with some real visual risks like she did in the Fighter video. That video was very captivating, unique and IMO futuristic compared to NMT. So I can very much see how a different approach to Bionic could have ended better than what we had. BUT that being said I think re-releasing Bionic may not be the wisest choice. Christina had a tough year that year and everyone knows that Bionic under performed. To attempt a re-release may come across as desperate. I think Christina has very much moved on and ready to focus on her next album, making it more personal and more quality than Bionic. I think its in her best interest to do that and then later down the road if she wants to re-release Bionic as a favor to the fans that might be a good idea.

I hope to god her team sees this and actually takes this into consideration! I get so much crap for being in love with Christina, especially during this era. But for that album to come out, totally redone, it would be amazing!! I think the bonus tracks should also be apart of the Bionic album. They are some of the best!!

Wink It is amazing when you have headphones on. Smooth was the only way to go to even out any oddities and accent the kind of production and instrumentation in the songs. Works well with the visual too! It was the longest I've worked on a set list.

Oh and i just finished listening to your arrangement for the songs and I really like the way it flows. Smile

I really like the idea of starting out uptempo, moving to ballads, and then back to uptempo; it creates a nice flow if you do it right.

xtinarox1113 thank you so much! Smile so glad you like it. I wish I could do more especially because you had helped with the images, but it was just impossible to do more in the following month or so, and it was pointless to wait that much, especially since the images are not of outstanding resolution.

I forgot to say that for the order of the songs I did stay faithful to Christina's vision. She wanted to start uptempo, move to the ballads and then back to the uptempo tracks for the finale. And actually, what I did had the perfect balance; 7 up-tempos followed by 7 slower songs and then the final part with the songs that hit the hardest, smaller than the first two.

I love it!!! I like your booklet idea more than the original. I completely agree with what you said about the booklet: "The booklet material was too busy, too much on the modern side and too much on the sexual side" I’m listening to your order of the songs & I like it too so far. Smile
